❤️ ABOUT THE EVENT SERIES:
It’s about time we as Capetonians start to host social gatherings that bring together the wonderfully varied people we’ve come to know, so that they can know one another too. The city is still segregated after 27 years of democracy, and the country is not yet a nation, and it therefore risks hyper polarization.
The Side by Side Braai Sessions serve as a safe space for people of all backgrounds to show up with respect for, and curiosity toward one another. A judgement-free zone and a very relaxed, fun vibe where the entire point is making friends that you might not have made otherwise. All ages, classes, colors, creeds, orientations equally welcomed.
The work of building the “rainbow nation" that Madiba promised starts in our own backyards. It’s time for Capetonians—esp. those clinging to comfort and stricken by media-fueled fear—set foot in a township, which is why we are running the sessions from Cape Town’s coolest venue and overnight accommodation: Zone 17.
🏠 Zone 17 (https://zoneseventeen.com/) is a secure, modern, 10-bedroom hostel in the heart of Langa, Cape Town, made for individuals and groups desiring a desegregated South Africa that offers community integration services to aid in the realisation of that vision—co-founded by brothers Yoli and Sabu Nocanda.
ℹ️ Side by Side Experiences (https://sidebysideexperiences.com/)—famous for introducing guests from far and wide to inspiring community leaders and entrepreneurs in Cape Town’s townships—is now placing its focus on this flagship monthly event. To get the popularity up, it is thus offering the experience for… drum roll……
💲 FREE! MAHALA!
🍔 We only ask that you bring something to throw on the braai, a side dish, and/or some beverages (drinking permitted, in moderation of course).
🎸 Also bring your musical instruments and other toys (although they may or may not get used, depending on the flow of the event).
🆚 There are two different versions of the sessions—PRO vs. LITE networking—that alternate from one month to the next:
• PRO (Month A) = more time put toward fun icebreakers, introducing ourselves to each other, moderated group discussion, sharing stories
• LITE (Month B) = a usual, informal braai, however with a shared purpose of making new, unexpected friends
📷 Jason (Side by Side founder) and his friends will spend a fair amount of time with camera in hand to capture the magic of an integrated Cape Town and South Africa, and they'll happily send all the content to you by WhatsApp and Google Drive. FYI Jason is using most his year+ long stay in Langa to produce content for his channel/podcast, “Side by Side with Jason,” which works to de-polarise SA by shifting viewpoints, and which you can checkout here: https://www.instagram.com/volofu/

💛 ABOUT THIS MONTH’S EVENT:
This month it’s a PRO networking session, so bring your listening ears and share your perspectives and stories—especially those on "freedom"—if you’re willing (you’ll never be pressurized to do so any stage, for the shy or introverted ones out there).
PROGRAMME
The programme is structured similar to a sandwich 🥪😅 Light and fluffy on the one side, meaty stuff in the middle, and light and fluffy on the other side:
1️⃣ 11h00-13h00 (2 hrs) - Mix and mingle (no ticket required)
2️⃣ 13h00-15h30 (2.5 hrs) - Facilitated networking (FREE ticket required - only 35 tix in total)
→ 13h00 - FOOD SERVED and ICEBREAKER (activity #1 of 4 — 45 mins):
One at a time, everyone answers the questions (i) who are you and what are your passions, (ii) fun fact about yourself, and (iii) your favourite TV show growing up.
→ 13h45 - GET & GIVE value creation exercise (activity #2 of 4 — 45 mins):
Everyone sitting in a circle writes down what they can give (top half of page) and what they'd like to get (bottom half of page), be it in their personal or professional lives, on one side of a piece of paper. All papers are passed once clockwise, and everyone has 1 minute to write comments (requests, suggestions, introductions, etc.) on the other side of the paper, signing it off with your name. Repeats until your paper arrives back to you full of new opportunities.
→ 14h30 - STEP IN THE CIRCLE differences & commonality exercise (activity #3 of 4 — 15 mins)
Everyone stands up in a circle, and one by one each person is given the opportunity to poll the entire group with a yes/no question, phrased as a statement. The YES's step into the circle, and the NO's remain in place. Example light statements might be "I have a tattoo" or "I play a musical instrument"; deeper statements might be "My parents are divorced" or "I have lost someone very close to me in the last two years".
→ 14h45 - ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON FREEDOM (activity #4 of 4 — 45 mins)
Moderated, intellectual group discussion on the topic of Freedom, in belated honour of Freedom Day. Participation is voluntary and not obligatory, you can simply listen in if you prefer. At future non-themed PRO networking braai sessions, the topic will be selected out of a hat. Potential wide-ranging topics include: Climate Change, Education, Hair, Language, Social Media, Tradition, and many more.
3️⃣ 15h30 - 17h00 close (1.5 hrs) - Mix and mingle (no ticket required)
ZONE 17 ACCOMMODATION TOURS
Small, three guest (max. for COVID safety) tours of the inside of the accommodation will be running throughout and led by Yoli and Sabu.
🎤 AFTERPARTY
A special, FREE-OF-CHARGE hip hop showcase of local Langa talent from 5pm is taking place after the braai. It will be held as a pubic, community event in the parking lot immediately adjacent to the Zone 17 HQ. Check out it’s promo video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sRBcA8zO3_LSx8N5V3UJyK9xEOWowVBM/view?usp=sharing

BRINGING FRIENDS: Bringing a +1 is permitted by default, however—as space is limited—permission to bring 2 or more additional friends requires must be requested in advance. The registration via Facebook Tickets/Eventbrite allows for two tickets claimed per person max.
BOOKING & RSVPs -- The only way to book your place is via Facebook Tickets/Eventbrite, and booking is mandatory, as space is limited. If you hit 'going' on the FB event without booking, we'll reach out to reconfirm your RSVP and send you the booking link. Once booked, you'll be added to a WhatsApp group chat about 24 hours before start, where additional information will be shared.
SAFETY/SECURITY -- The Zone 17 HQ, as mentioned, is completely secure (several locks, barbed wire around the premises, etc). We will be inside the property the entire time. The outside neighborhood is extremely friendly, and there's no reason to feel unsafe attending. The aforementioned shuttle service ensures you do not get lost en route to the HQ. Cell service is strong throughout Langa should you need to contact me, use a map, etc.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS / INSTRUCTIONS -- We will be running a shuttle service between the Caltex Garage (where there's plenty of secure parking) and the Zone 17 HQ, which are only a few minutes drive apart. WhatsApp Jason (https://wa.me/27722145091/) for directions straight to the Zone 17 HQ, otherwise the Caltex Garage is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/94Vamgj1xB6AVNJFA
PARKING: Should you drive directly to the venue (Zone 17 HQ), there is ample safe parking at the back of the house, which is entirely visible and accessible from the backyard we'll be braaing in.
CARPOOLING: If you want/need a lift, you may be able to catch one from someone else driving in. Just let us know and we'll help coordinate that by WhatsApp. If there are enough people (at least 10) request it, a R80 return transfer (in a hired Quantum minibus) from the CBD directly to the venue and back again at 5pm could be arranged. WhatsApp Jason (https://wa.me/27722145091/) if you are one of those people.
FOOD/DRINK -- Please bring enough food/drink for yourself PLUS ONE to ensure food/drink doesn’t run low. Bring a cooler box with ice for beverages if you can. We have both a wood and a gas braai, but likely only the latter will get used. Coordination of who buys what will be done on the WhatsApp group.
ALCOHOL SAFETY & COMFORT -- Should anyone drink too much and thereby cause social discomfort to others, they will be asked to leave. If you plan to drink, consider booking a room for the night (R300) through Zone 17 instead of driving: https://zoneseventeen.com/book-now/
